When Standard Login Doesn't Work

Most login problems are resolved with a simple password reset. But account recovery — a deeper process — is needed when you've lost access to the email address or phone number linked to your account. This guide covers both scenarios.

Security note: Never share your password with anyone during a recovery process. Legitimate platforms and legitimate assistance providers will never ask for your password to help you recover an account.

Step 1: Try the Standard Password Reset First

Before assuming you need full account recovery, try the "Forgot Password" process on the platform's login page. If you still have access to the email linked to your account, a reset link will be sent there. Check your spam folder if it doesn't arrive within a few minutes.

Step 2: If You've Lost Access to Your Email

This is the most difficult recovery scenario. Your options typically include:

  • Phone number verification: If you added a phone number to your account, the platform may be able to send a verification code there instead.
  • Backup codes: If you set up two-factor authentication, you may have been given one-time backup codes. Check where you stored these.
  • Trusted device: Some platforms allow you to verify your identity through a device that is already logged in.
  • Identity verification form: Many platforms have an account recovery form requiring you to prove your identity through information like billing history, previous passwords, or other personal details associated with the account.

Step 3: Two-Factor Authentication Lockout

If you're locked out because you can't complete two-factor authentication:

  • Check for backup codes you may have saved when setting up 2FA
  • Try alternative 2FA methods the platform may support (SMS vs. authenticator app)
  • Look for a "Can't access your authenticator?" or similar link on the login page
  • Contact the platform's account support — most have a dedicated recovery process for this scenario

Step 4: Suspected Unauthorized Access

If you believe someone else has accessed your account:

  • Attempt to log in and change your password immediately if you still have access
  • Check your account's "Active Sessions" or "Device Activity" and sign out all other devices
  • Review recent account activity for changes you didn't make
  • Contact the platform to report the suspected compromise — they typically have a dedicated process for this

What to Have Ready When Contacting a Platform

When you need to contact a platform's support team for account recovery, having the following information ready will speed up the process:

  • The email address associated with the account
  • The name on the account
  • Recent billing information (last 4 digits of card used, amount of last charge)
  • Approximate date the account was created
  • Any order or confirmation numbers from past activity
